{"id":1004,"date":"2019-03-12T01:20:15","date_gmt":"2019-03-12T05:20:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/?p=1004"},"modified":"2022-10-02T09:33:47","modified_gmt":"2022-10-02T13:33:47","slug":"chat-and-chew-focuses-on-entrepreneurship-and-innovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/chat-and-chew-focuses-on-entrepreneurship-and-innovation\/","title":{"rendered":"2019 Chat and Chew Focuses on Entrepreneurship and Innovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Manish Kumar and Christina Moazed<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A special Chat and Chew event focused on innovation and entrepreneurship hosted by the Women in Engineering Science Technology and Math (WEST-M) took place in Makerspace at Tandon. \u00a0Professor Jin Montclare started by talking about the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Convergence of Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) Institute<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> at NYU. \u00a0She shared all the programs the CIE Institute supports starting with the Pre-Capstone Innovation course open to undergrads, followed by the Capstone Competition to be held this May for all seniors at Tandon. \u00a0Information about the upcoming <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/entrepreneur.nyu.edu\/resource\/startup-sprint-student\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2019 Summer Sprints<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was also presented. \u00a0The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/people\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">e-Inclusion Network<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was highlighted as a group of informal advisors that support women and other students from traditionally underrepresented groups on their journey in STEM and entrepreneurship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1005 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/03\/1-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/03\/1-300x200.png 300w, http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/03\/1-768x513.png 768w, http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/03\/1.png 974w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Above: Professor Jin Montclare, Director of the Convergence for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) Institute<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Afterwards, four alumni of the summer I-Corps, summer and J-term startup Sprint supported by the CIE Institute came up to share their experiences about the p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rogram and their ventures. The panel consisted of Deniz Vurmas (Tandon, CBE PhD student) founder of \u00a0Digistrips a provider of digitized home use test for quick diagnosis of urinary tract infection, who participated in the 2018 Summer Startup Sprint, Daniela Blanco (Tandon, CBE PhD student) co-founder of Sunthetics, developer of an emission-free precursor for nylon, creating a platform for green reactions within the chemical industry, who is an alumni of the 2018 J-Sprint, Andrew Olsen (Tandon, CBE PhD student) co-founder of Brooklyn BioScience, which focuses on detoxifying pesticides in an environmentally friendly way and participant of the first 2017 Summer I-Corps, and Jonas Guenther (Tandon, MS Technology Management 2018) founder of We are the New Farmers, which is an urban farm growing sustainable produce for specialty markets lacking year-round local supply and alumni of the 2018 Summer Sprint. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-1006 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/03\/2-300x225.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"629\" height=\"472\" srcset=\"http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/03\/2-300x225.png 300w, http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/03\/2-768x575.png 768w, http:\/\/microsites.engineering.nyu.edu\/cie\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2019\/03\/2.png 974w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 629px) 100vw, 629px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Above (left to right): <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deniz Vurmaz (Digistrips), <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daniela Blanco (Sunthetics), Andrew Olsen (Brooklyn BioScience), <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jonas Guenther (We are the New Farmers)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deniz Vurmaz of Digistrips discussed her goal to be a bridge between academia and industry. \u00a0She shared her experience working on renewable energy projects and was awarded the NYU Green Grant and an award from the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE). \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Daniela Blanco of Sunthetics described her focus in the areas of electrochemistry and clean energy. \u00a0Her participation in the J-term Startup Sprint, 300K Competition, and InnoVention Competition helped her grow as an entrepreneur. \u00a0Andrew Olsen described how Brooklyn BioScience was focused on creating a low-cost and ecologically friendly enzyme for the remediation and detoxification of a class of common pesticides for farmers, vintners, and waste management companies. \u00a0After participating in the summer I-Corps program, his team received a PowerBridge New York award in the amount of $150,000. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jonas Guenther of We are the New Farmers talked about how the startup got its start at NYU Tandon with a group of students in 2016. The team developed a prototype of a fully enclosed tabletop environment that could house 20 plants. \u00a0The project\u2019s goal is to promote community engagement and sustainability. A refrigerator-sized prototype was housed in the Tandon MakerSpace. Mei, a message app that includes artificial intelligence (AI) designed to help with texting relationships.
