The TRIO’s information session happened on 19-August-2019  at the Dibner Library, Brooklyn Campus of NYU. Interested students were given an overview of what could be expected from the BS/MS Program. Jennifer Piro (Assistant Director, Undergraduate Programs) and Sara-Lee Ramsawak (Director, Academics & Global Programs) explained in detail the requirements for the BS/MS program. Undergraduates with strong academic records in certain programs may apply for admission to the BS/MS Accelerated Program, which leads to the award of both a Bachelors and a Masters degree. While still undergraduates, this program allows students to make steady progress towards completing the two degrees for a lesser cost through a combination of earned AP credits, completed summer coursework, and additional credits over the limit completed each semester. Qualified students are typically considered for admission to the program during their junior year. In their remaining undergraduate semesters, they will complete some graduate coursework during regular terms and/or during the summer towards their desired MS degree.

Jack Bringardner (Industry Assistant Professor in the General Engineering Department and Civil Engineering Department at NYU Tandon School of Engineering) gave his advice to students on how to utilize the BS/MS study program to their advantage. He recommended students to approach faculty members in-person instead of sending out their resumes virtually.

Jin Kim Montclare (Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and Director of the Convergence of Innovation and Entrepreneurship Institute ) explained to the students about the role of Convergence of Innovation & Entrepreneurship (CIE) Institute. She explained that the NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s CIE Institute supports initiatives that help faculty and students reach greater heights by harnessing important technologies and reimagining business ideas. CIE catapult these ideas into advanced, problem-solving innovations to address society’s greatest problems. CIE’s mission is to increase diversity and multidisciplinarity in STEM entrepreneurship and provide guidance as well as resources for STEM innovators to start-up.

Finally, there was a short speech by one of the research fellows of CIE (Shubham Aggarwal), where he explained his role at the CIE Institute and a general student’s perspective on the vibrant life at NYU. He explained how to take advantage of all the resources that NYU has to offer and to focus on studies and make great friends during their time at NYU.

The Session Concluded with a short Q&A round where students asked their questions on the BSMS program. The session was hosted by Shawn Tina Harrod (Counselor, TRIO Scholars Program)
